Honestly if you really want Fantasy Hero "Complete" [as a GM] plan on buying in any format: Books 1 and 2 Fantasy Hero Bestiary Grimoire [The above are not really optional, but they can be pdf] [The following are optional but recommended, again pdf is fine] Skills Equipment Martial Arts for weapon styles and so forth I think I've bought all of those here except Martial Arts I'm passing on that for my campaign.
If your players have never played HERO before, the Basic Rulebook is super useful, just don't make them read the whole thing. I purchased this from the HERO game store and have loved it! That said, the Grischun setting is intriguing and unique.
The book outlines the ruling structure, nature of magic, and cultural histories of the different races. It is simply a setting which must be populated either by the GM or supplements. In my case, I had the players choose a city on the map and write its history, which was incorporated from their backstory. I am very, very pleased with what I got but I agree with other commenters in that it is more of a 'supplement' than a 'complete' collection.
Am I blind, or the Damage Class Table is really missing from this book? It's still playable but you have to work it out or go on the forums if neccessary. How much damage does a sword do in this system - book gives no clue. How much protection does a leather jerkin offer - nothing in the book. In what way is this product "Complete"? I agree this was a disappointing product. Hero Games has fallen a long way in recent years. The system itself is excellent at its core.
But it needs to be presented much, much better. Note: I backed the Kickstarter, so will not show as a purchaser here If you check pages and you'll find armor and weapon values.
